RESTRICTED 168) 0201 2 BRITISH EMBASSY SANA'A 040/1 31 December 1978 KJ Passmore Esq Middle East Department FCO London SW 1 UAE/OMAN BORDER DISPUTE I have read with interest Julian Walker's letter of 28 November about the tribes and tribesmen involved in the settlement of the above frontier. In paragraph 4 he states that the last four miles of the frontier north of Umm al Zamul were never settled. When I came to this stretch, I secured agreement to a plotting which seemed to satisfy both sides and was included in the letter I sent to Sultan Said bin Taimur in July 1967. The area of Umm al Zamul itself (a circle of one mile radius centred on the main or bitter well) was, however, defined as a neutral zone, and this definition was accepted by both parties.
