  • The efforts by HMG to get the UAE to agree to a contract for Hawk aircraft in preference to the French Alphajet. It includes the efforts of the Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington [Peter Alexander Rupert Carington], the Ministry of Defence, the Minister of State Douglas Hurd, and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in the form of personal appeals, ministerial and defence sales visits, and charm offensives to persuade the UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the Commander in Chief of the UAE Armed Forces Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to order the aircraft
