This file concerns the possible public release of records concerning Iran covering the years 1952-54 by the US State Department. It contains correspondence relating to:
- Records of the British-American Planning Talks held in Washington DC; topics discussed include the release of the Iran records as well as improving US-Soviet Union relations, Africa, North Yemen, Afghanistan, China and Southeast Asia, Vietnam, the Korean Peninsula and Japan
- Concerns that the material to be released would be damaging to HMG
- US Country Director for Iran Henry Precht’s belief that the position of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi is untenable
- Requests for UK-US consultation on the release of the records
- The question of whether the US releasing British documents obtained by the US Government; and HMG’s veto over the release of British documents
