Aden/Dhofar frontier
FO 1016/777 1964 Jan 01 - 1964 Dec 31Description
This file relates to the disputed frontier between Aden and Dhofar. It contains correspondence on:
- A genuine misunderstanding that has arisen between the Sultan of Muscat and Oman Saeed Bin Taimur and F C L Chauncy concerning the Sultan's view of his border with the Aden Protectorate
- A map showing the Sultan's claims and the 'Chauncy Line'
- Efforts to demarcate the border and the Sultan's hope of doing so before constitutional change in the Aden Protectorate makes it harder
- The need to take into account the views of local tribes, the Sultan of Mahra and the Sultan of Quaiti
- The Sultan of Muscat's wish to formalise settlement of the parts of the border upon which there is no dispute north and south of the territory known as the 'bulge'
- The consequences arising from border adjustments to the Pan-American Concession Agreement, which is based on the ‘Chauncy line’
- Plans to transport oil rigs belonging to Mecom Oi Company to the Pan American Oil Company in Mahra near Wadi Mitan; the Sultan's intention to escort them with Dhofar troops as far as 52 degree East, W H T Luce's opposition to the escort plan and the Sultan's eventual agreement to allow the rigs to cross the neutral zone unescorted.
