their fellows. Note has therefore been made as to which faction each tribe belongs. 4. Several tribes inhabit frontier areas between the Trucial States and the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. Where the majority of the tribesmen live in the Trucial States the tribe is fully described in these notes; but where the majority lives on Sultanate territory, a full description will be included in a later set of notes on the Muscat tribes. A possible exception has been made in the case of the Shihuh tribe, which lives partly in a frontier area which is yet to be demarcated; and all the available material on this tribe has is linna been included without regard to whether the majority is in Oman or not 5. Many of the inter-state frontiers are not yet demarcated; although and womenthese notes give a picture of the tribal position in each state as it appears today, they should not be taken as having any bearing on the problem of the definition of the frontiers. 6. Most of the tribes in the area are Sunni and exceptions have been noted. Persians can be assumed to be Shia in all mur Where this is specified were it is known. Some tribes have members following more than one of the orthodox schools and when this is the case two or more names are given. When the school is not known the tribe is noted as being Sunni. Some tribes which were Wahhabi in the last century which may tougste Metttletten have more recently become less strictly so since that time. These are noted as being Wahhabihwwn. August 1958
