Description

This file relates to the UK's technical assistance programme in Bahrain, to promote economic and social development, as Britain prepares to withdraw from the Gulf. Primarily it relates to the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Governments, eventually signed on 15 August 1971. It contains correspondence and memoranda concerning:

  • Possible involvement in the Muharraq technical school
  • The proposed visit to the Gulf by Director of the Overseas Development Administration's Tropical Pesticides Research Headquarters and Information Unit Dr H S Hopf, to assess pest control problems and advise on methods of control
  • The establishment and the functions of the British Council in Bahrain
  • The implications if Bahrain goes for separate independence; and a proposed cultural convention to safeguard the conditions of service of British Council and other expatriate personnel, with the preferred method being a Memorandum of Understanding similar to the Ethiopian model
  • The recruitment of a labour advisor, including the candidature and CV of William Johnson Hull
  • An account of the present state of the programme by Political Agent A J D Stirling, including reference to education, fisheries, civil aviation, labour, social affairs, housing, finance, water resources and health
  • The recruitment of a medical administrator to the health department, including the candidature of Dr Cotney Wade
