REGISTRY NO.35

28 APR 1972

When I called on the Sultan in Salalah on
13 April he told me that Tariq had asked for
the job of permanent Omani representative to
WHO and that he wasinclined to grant the request.
Tariq's idea apparently was to give himself some
sort of diplomatic status in Geneva. I understand
from Asim Jamali that the Sultan has now turned
down this request and suggested that Tariq lives
in Germany. It seems possible - though I have
no evidence - that the Sultan may have received
advice on this from the Saudis (para 2 of St John
Armitage's letter 3/6 of 15 March), as there has

been a certain amount of coming and going in
Nem3/31211 connection with the forthcoming visit of Saudi

military and civil delegations to consider aid
to Oman.

2. Asim Jamali says that Tariq is now very
angry andupset with his nephew and Asim is doing
his best to quieten him down. He has in fact
suggested that Tariq returns to Oman to discuss
the matter with the Sultan himself as he believes
that there may have been some genuine misunderstanding
In the meantime however Asim has himself been
appointed the Omani delegate to the WHO Meeting
on 9 May and this may give him an opportunity of
seeing Tariq in Europe iſ the latter does not take
his advice and return for discussions with the
Sultan.
