Military assault by South Yemen against armed forces of Oman
FCO 8/1862 1972 Jan 01-1972 Dec 31Description
This file concerns the escalating violence on the Oman-People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) border, between the South Yemen-backed Popular Front for the Liberation of Oman and the Arabian Gulf (PFLOAG) and the Omani military in the context of the Dhofar war, and the diplomatic activity around this; as well as questions in Britain around HMG's role in the conflict. It contains correspondence relating to:
- An Omani strike on Hauf [Hawf] inside South Yemen, believed to be a major PFLOAG base, following attacks from across the border at Habarut
- Reactions to the strike among other Arab countries
- Sightings of presumable South Yemeni reconnaissance aircraft over Salalah, fears of retaliation for the strike on Hawf, and an intelligence assessment of South Yemen's air force and offensive capabilities
- Parliamentary questions on the role of British personnel in the Dhofar conflict
- Questions around compensation for the families of British personnel killed in Oman
- Statements to the UN on the violence by Oman and South Yemen
- PFLOAG communiqués alleging British and Omani aggression and rebel victories
- Changes in the terms of reference of British seconded personnel serving in Oman, whereby any action beyond Oman’s borders must have prior approval from HMG
- Media coverage on the violence, including an article by the Chinese news agency Hsinhua on the Dhofar rebels and the Omani response at the UN to the article
