Saudi Arabia-Bahrain Causeway
FCO 8/566 1968Description
This file relates to a proposed Bahrain-Saudi Arabia causeway, which would link Bahrain to the Arabian Peninsula. It contains correspondence and memoranda concerning:
- Eagerness of the Ruler of Bahrain Sheikh Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa and his brother Sheikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa to proceed as soon as possible
- Support, in principle, of King Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud; but his reluctance to press ahead immediately due to regional politics, particularly regarding relations with Iran, which claims sovereignty over Bahrain
- Press cutting from the Daily Telegraph, 'Bridge plan for Bahrain offends Shah', 13 February 1968
- Interest from Dutch, French, and British firms, including engineering consultants Sir William Halcrow & Partners Limited
- Information that may be needed when considering applications for feasibility surveys
- HMG's willingness in principle to offer modest help
