Treaty for return of Kuria Muria Islands by UK to Muscat and Oman (pre-treaty)

This file relates to the return of the Kuria Maria [Khuriya Muriya] Islands to the sovereignty of the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. It contains:

• Copies of the Treaty of Cession between Her Britannic Majesty and the Sultan of Muscat and Oman, in Arabic and English, signed by the Sultan of Muscat and Oman Saeed Bin Taimur and R S Crawford on 15 November 1967, with early drafts and preliminary correspondence
• Correspondence on what degree and form of consultation with the islanders would be appropriate and a possible role for the UN in assessing their opinion
• Correspondence on the significance of historical legal and administrative ties between the islands and Aden
• Reports on the health of the islanders by Surgeon Lieutenant N Richards following visits in February and October 1967 by HMS Ashanti and HMS Gurkha

• Records of discussions held at the Foreign Office over future sovereignty of Kamaran Island and Perim Island and the possibility of 'an international waterways arrangement' for Perim
