FO 371/179874 1965Description
This file relates to legal jurisdiction in Qatar. It contains correspondence concerning:

- Draft Qatar criminal procedure and penal codes [enclosed] proposed by the Government's legal advisor Dr Hasan Kamel, based on a Franco-Egyptian model; the possible recruitment of Jordanian judges which might lead to a more Anglo-Jordanian model; law number four of 1965 [enclosed] establishing the traffic court and law; and the possible collapse of the process of transferring jurisdiction because of differences between Kamel and the Chief Qadi, from Saudi Arabia, who insists that all Muslims should be tried under Sharia Law. It includes a record of a meeting between the Deputy Ruler, the Political Agent and Sir John Whyatt (18, 20-23, 25-26, 28-29, 31-32)
