Interest of China in Persian Gulf, 1970 Jan 01-1970 Dec 31

This file contains a memorandum by J M Edes relating to an enquiry into Chinese activities in the Gulf, which found no evidence in the Trucial States, Bahrain and Qatar. It did identify subversive activity in Dhofar, in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman and support for the Dhofar Liberation Front. The enquiry questions whether this poses a serious ideological threat and suggests that Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed's programme of rehabilitation will cause Chinese influence to wane. This file also contains brief reference by B T Holmes to Chinese influence in Tanzania.
