This file concerns the visit of Crown Prince Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia to the UK in May 1977 on his way to Washington, DC for talks with US President Jimmy Carter. During the visit, the Saudi delegation attended a luncheon at Chequers with Prime Minister James Callaghan, Chancellor Denis Healey, Industry Secretary Eric Varley, Trade Secretary Edmund Dell and Energy Secretary Tony Benn. It contains memoranda and correspondence concerning:

  • The composition of the Saudi delegation, including Foreign Minister Prince Saud Bin Faisal Al Saud, the Minister of Finance Mohammad Abu Al Khail, the Minister of Industry Dr Ghazi Al Qusaibi, the Minister of Petroleum Ahmad Zaki Yamani and Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulla Al Saud
  • Briefing material for the luncheon, concerning personality notes, Saudi involvement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), prospective commercial projects in Saudi Arabia, Israeli elections and the Arab-Israeli conflict, the proposed causeway between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, UK-Saudi trade, the Downing Street Summit, Rhodesia, oil and energy affairs and the Conference on International Economic Cooperation (CIEC)
  • Prince Fahd’s concerns regarding the elections in Israel and the influence of the Soviet Union in the Middle East
  • Prince Fahd's affirmation of the strength of the Anglo-Saudi relationship
  • Reports from the embassies of the Federal Republic of Germany in the US and France concerning the subsequent Saudi visit to Washington, DC and Paris.
