Interest of China in Persian Gulf, 1970 Jan 01-1970 Dec 31

This file contains a memorandum by J M Edes relating to an enquiry into Chinese activities in the Gulf, which found no evidence in the Trucial States, Bahrain and Qatar. It did identify subversive activity in Dhofar, in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman and support for the Dhofar Liberation Front. Zanzibar subsidy, 1967-1968

This file concerns the Zanzibar Subsidy, which had been paid annually by the colonial Government of India on behalf of the Sultan of Zanzibar (a former Omani colony) to the Sultan of Muscat and Oman until India's independence in 1947, and is now being paid by the Foreign Office despite the extinction of the Sultanate of Zanzibar in 1964. It contains correspondence relating to reducing or terminating the Zanzibar Subsidy now that the Sultanate is generating revenue from oil and the damage this may cause to relations with the Sultan Saeed Bin Taimur.
