future west of 53°30'E (i.e. Mirfa) without
consulting H.M.G.

5. 1950 In August H.M.S. Flamingo visited
the Khor al Odaid and explored it.
There was no reaction from the Sa'udis,

6. 1950. P.C.L. told that they might operate
up to the line claimed by ibn Sa'ud before
1949.

Ibn Sa'ud was told (F.0. telegram to
Jedda No. 451 of September 28) that their
endeavour to interrupt the company's work
by a succession of increasing territorial
claims could not be admitted.

THIS MARGIN.

P.C.L. sent parties into the area in
October with Abu Dhabi guards. Camps were
established at Rwais, Jabal Baraka, at 24°
15'N 51° 32'E and at 240 N 52010'E.
Operations were carried out in the area between
52° 30'E and 51 15'E north of latitude 230
40'N to the east of 510 45'E and thence
diagonally in a straight line to the base
of the Qatar peninsula at 24° 40'N 51° 15'E.

The Sa'udis protested (Jedda telegrams
296 of November 2 and 347 of December 8, 1950).

7. 1950. Permission was given to P.C.L. in
December to enter the area west of Jabal
Dhanna and go up to the western end of the
Sabkha Matti and as far south as Sufuq. The
exploration was, however, postponed.

NOTHING TO BE WRITTEN IN

8. 1950 Shaikh Shakhbut and his brother
Khalid visited Markhiya on a hunting
expedition.

The Sa'udis objected (Jedda tel. No. 94
of May 7,1951).

9. 1951 As a result of the conversations
with the Amir Faisal both the oil company
and the Trucial Coast Levies were formally
restricted from operating west of Mirfa
(F.0. ES/1053/8 of August 8, 1951).

10. 1952. Buckmaster's tour which started at
Buraimi and covered the Liwa oasis and the
coastal strip from Markhiya to Abu Dhabi in
the early summer of 1952 seems to have evoked
no Sa'udi protest, although Sa'udi "concern" uc
at a similar tour of Lee-Oldfield of the Lorot
Survey in January had been expressed (Jedda
telegram No. 82. of March 15, 1952.)
