CONFIDENTIAL - 3 3 م of India's letter No. 1209-E of 5th June, 1903, was written in reply to an enquiry dated 28th April, 1903, fromRear-Admiral Sir C. Drury at Trincomalee asking "under whosejurisdiction the Araian shore from Koweit to Tibba now is''.9. An India Office secret memorandum No. B 430 dated 17th February, 1934, recommended that the southern boundary of Qatar "shall be accepted as being ........ a line running across the base of the peninsula from a point not south of1152/270 the latitude of the head of Dohat-as-Salwah bay to a pointnot south of the north side of the Khor-7.1-Odeid inlet. Theline indicated on the I.P.C. map would satisfy these criteria 1934 F906 and if it is confirmed that it is the line at present claimed| by the Shaikh of Qatar it could be accepted". This I.P.C.1984 map was later (in 1935) attached to the concession granted by the Shaikh of Qatar (Shaikh Abdulla bin Jasim al Thani) tothe A.1.0.C. and subsequently transferred to the I.P.C. Inreaching this conclusion the memorandum says "the boundary between Qatar and the adjoining Trucial Shaikhdom of Abu Dhabihas been the subject of frequent dispute in the past. TheShaikh of Abu Dhabi has claimed sovereignty over a stretch ofqatar territory running so far north as the Bay of Umm al Hul,south of Wakra. The Shaikh of atar, for his part, hasclaimed sovereignty over an area in the Abu Dhabi Shaikhdomrunning as far east as the Sabkhat Matti. His Majesty'sGovernment has consistently refused to recognise claims so exaggerated by either party but they have repeatedlyintimated that they regard the Khor-el-Odeid, which liesabout midway between the extreme points referred to, as appertaining to Abu Dhabi, They have also recognised the Abu Dhabi claim to the district of 'Aqal, geographical details of which are given in 1 iii of the Appendix to this note and which contains both the Khor-el-Odeid and the Khor adh Y'Dhuwaihin.CONFIDENTIAL
